Hum

Hum is an addictive drug popular in the late 26th century CE. It is a remarkably potent and specific hallucinogen, one that digs deep into the subconscious of the user to bring them joy that will make them weep, or murderous rage, or abyssal depths of self-loathing, or other deep, deep emotional experiences. It is not immediately addictive, but becomes harder to resist the more times it is taken.

Physically, Hum is yellow-black paste that smells like a combination of paint thinner and brackish water. It is taken by using a small brush to apply a thin film of the substance to the gums of the user, where it is absorbed into the body (and also stains the teeth of the user). It would probably be illegal, if there were such a thing as nations of laws at that point in history.
