The Pharmacoepia Fantastica classifies fictional drugs into various types, based on their effects, origins and assorted other qualities. This page defines each of those types – please note that it is not uncommon for a fictional drug to fit into more than one of these categories:

Abortifacients
Drugs that are used to prevent or abort conception.

Addictives
Drugs that create an addiction in the user when consumed.

Analgesics
Pain-relieving drugs.

Anti-Agathics
Drugs that reduce, slow or prevent aging.

Aphrodisiacs
Drugs that provoke sexual desire.

Cyberdrugs
Drugs used by robots, cyborgs and other technological entities.

Depressants
Drugs that cause depression or other low emotional states. Often referred to as Downers.

Euphorics
Drugs that cause sensations of happiness, well-being and mirth. Often referred to as Uppers.

Hallucinogens
Drugs that cause visions or hallucinations.

Intoxicants
Drugs that cause drunkenness or other forms of intoxication.

Laxatives
Drugs that regulate excretion.

Magicals
Drugs whose origins are magical, such as alchemical preparations, substances derived from magical beings and the like.

Medicals
Drugs that are officially prescribed for the treatment of illness or injury.

Metafictionals
Drugs that are fictional even within their fictional context.

Mutagens
Drugs that cause temporary or permanent alterations to the body of the user.

Nanotech
Drugs whose active agent is highly miniaturized technology.

Opiates
Drugs derived from or related to opium.

Pesticides
Chemicals intended to be used to kill vermin, rather than as drugs.

Placebos
Drugs whose only effects are psychosomatic.

Poisons
Drugs intended to kill, debilitate or otherwise harm.

Psychiatrics
Drugs used to treat mental illness.

Sedatives
Drugs that cause sleep or relaxation.

Sentients
Drugs that are actually thinking entities.

Steroids
Drugs that enhance or encourage muscle development.

Stimulants
Drugs which increase energy levels and/or prolong wakefulness.

Truth Sera
Drugs which attempt to prevent lying and deception. Few of them are infallible.
